My Madrid, Alcala, how can I forget you!!!!

I am flying thru Madrid this time and memories flash back again. Its a mythical city in my life. I lived there as a young poor boy, and was so much welcome and accepted that its memories have lingered over the years. My heritage is from Tenerife on both father and mother side, and I was there like home.

This street or calle de Alcala has 10,5 kms long from the Puerta del Sol to the Ave de la Hispanidad, passing by the best of Madrid. Yes, it was and always will be MY street. For those who knows,  I lived in working class Madrid away from tourist center, right the locals, and the experience its great, each time on the city. Thanks God it has been often after I left it in 1974.

Meaning, On the street of Alcala with the skirt well pressed and the the spikenard on the hips, the florist come and go, smiling widely on the sidewalks of the street of Alcala. The good looking waiter that sees her ,tells her, come with me and put me on my vest anything you want, that the flower that you give me, will be seen with envy throughtout the street of Alcala. Something like that.

Here is a rendition in youtube, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlEwDxu6dAA , and this one another favorite from Rocio Durcal, Viejo Madrid or old Madrid, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mzlKafz9Ij4&feature=related  ohh can I cry?

The street began in the early 15C on the old road to Alcalá de Henares ,and reaching to  Aragón,and was call then calle de los  Olivares the street was started by masons, horseshoe artists, and carriage rentals with mules, and was the beginning of the diligences or people mover in the whole of Spain!! When Madrid became the capital of Spain in the 16C,more luxurious mansions and palaces were built on it.

Given way to the Puerta del Sol, until 1856  was the site of the church and hospital of  Buen Suceso, founded by king  Carlos I ;later it was the Hotel París, the most elegant of Madrid at that time, and on the bottom floor it was the venerable Café de la Montaña, now gone. At the corner with the calle de Sevilla,it was La Equitativa insurance company  building built between 1882-1891  you see the facade with heads of elephants under the balcony of the first floor  crown with a small tower and clock : in 1920 the Banco Español de Crédito purchase the building.

Continue on and see the old Customs or Aduanas building, and continue to see the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, built in 1724-1725;follow this up with the Casino de Madrid built in 1905-1910  in the old building of the palacio de Villarroel.  Se emblematic building of Madrid, in the corner with Caballero de Gracia, and beginning of the  Gran Vía,see the French style palace of Union and Fénix, finished in 1910 . Its cupola a city landmark today ,used to be crowned with a ave fénix  symbolising the old company ,but in 1975, when the new company took over was change to a victoria style statue, this is the company or building  Metrópolis.

Moving right alont on old Madrid, as you crossed the Gran Vía and calle del Marqués de Valdeiglesias, you found the  Casa del Párroco, first building done between 1910-1912,as part of the public works to do the Gran Vía.  Just after you have the old theater or Teatro Apolo, considered a cathedral of the small art, capacity for 2,500 persons and built in 1873. Here was first played the greatest zarzuelas in history such as La verbena de la Paloma (1894), La Revoltosa (1898), and Doña Francisquita (1923). It closed in 1929, after being purchased by the bank Banco de Vizcaya for its headquarters in Madrid.  Going on the sidewalk to the right crossing the calle de Sevilla, you first see a building for the Banco de Bilbao built between 1920-1923.

You follow wondering the street and see the old Education ministry building or Ministerio de Educación, built in  1929 ,and it has a beautiful room or salon de Goya, and a completer gallery of pictures of all its ministries.  Another emblematic building and great for snack and coffee, is the El Círculo de Bellas Artes done in Alcala by 1921-1926 webpage http://www.circulobellasartes.com/ag_acceso.php You are about to reach Cibeles, and on the right you see the Banco de España built between  1882-1891. Right by the angle to  calle del Barquillo,in a former palace now you find the Instituto Cervantes. Right after at the old palace of Buenavista you now see the Cuartel General del Ejército de Tierra (headquarters of the Army).

You then reach the plaza de Cibeles, done under king Carlos III, with a nice perpective of the Puerta de Alcala. You have here the old Palacio de Linares (built 1873) , today the wonderful  Casa de América,to the left, and the palacio de Comunicaciones (old post office of Spain) today is the seat of the Mayor’s office to the right, built in 1905-1918. On the left sidewalk you see the now reopen until different beat the old  Cervecería de Correos, that have the peña or gathering group of  Federico García Lorca, and the Café Lión,with its famous crypt of La Ballena Alegre (happy whale) that have frequent visits by many  great names of Spain such as  Valle-Inclán, Penagos, Bergamín and Francisco Ayala;as well as politicals such as Azaña, Calvo Sotelo , José Antonio Primo de Rivera, and after the Civil War, such as  Dámaso Alonso and Vicente Aleixandre…And to the right you see the wonderful gardens del Buen Retiro.

Puerta de Alcalá, yes we arrive at the grand daddy for me, need to be here always visit by, the church of San Manuel y San Benito, built in 1911.  The Puerta de Alcala was done under king Carlos III in 1778 by Sabatini. At the entrance to what today is calle de Serrano, an old execution site of the Holy Seat, was the old primitive first bullfight arena of Madrid done in 1799. The current plaza Monumental de Las Ventas, was built in neomudéjar style in 1931.http://www.las-ventas.com/ Around it many wonderful bars such as La Tienta, La Divisa, La Monumental, Los Timbales(my all time favorite in the area), El Albero, and Los Tarantos.

A bit after by metro Quintana you have my hangout when in Madrid at Docamar, since 1963 ,the best patatas bravas in Madrid, lol!!! http://www.docamar.com/

And the calle de Alcalá continuos it crosses the road M-30, and goes across the districts of Ciudad Lineal(Quintana) and San Blas ,finally ends running parallel to the avenida de América,in the interchange Eisenhower, where the road A-2 (carretera de Barcelona) and road  M-14 (avenida de la Hispanidad or carretera del Aeropuerto to Barajas) crossed.

Yes I lived at Calle Alcala 331, 2do A, Buzon 67, Madrid, metro Quintana ,line 5 yeaaaahhh!! I love you Madrid. Thanks for the memories and my mother who is in heaven thanks you too.

Nostalgic Madrid, to heaven and a hole on the sky to look down on it every day!

Yes; something I need to write about. I lived in Madrid from 1970-1974, there other times other periods, harder times for all. However, my love for the city has not waned n all this year. I am an appreciated person, and remember kindly all the good times of my life. Madrid is part of it.

When a young boy I had the inmense luck of playing for the Real Madrid organisation, first in baseball then in football/soccer. Real Madrid has remained my team of my life, Hala Madrid to all!!!

I used to lived at Calle Alcala ,331; 2do A, buzon 67 Madrid, right by the exit of metro line 5 Quintana corner with Argentina. Many memories too intense to write all about it. I came from one dictatorship to another, and it was tough. We were dissidents in both right or left, they are not good.

While there, to go play baseball we went to the field at the Parque de la Elipa, no metro then, just by bus, the P13, it was a glorious ride of youth chasing the girls going to the park as a means of entertainement in those days. http://www.clubdeportivos.com/club-deportivo.php?clubdeportivo=centro%20deportivo%20municipal%20la%20elipa&id=260

I left Madrid for the USA , where I spent most of my life. After many years, I try to remember the bus line and had in my mind the P13. However, Madrid and Spain had change ,for the better. The bus line was no longer there, and could not find it. Then ,yesterday trying to find information on the general strike in the city tomorrow http://www.rtve.es/noticias/huelga-general/ i stumbled into a wiki page that talk about a bus line 113. Well to my surprise this bus line 113 is the new number for the P13 after the creation of the Madrid bus system EMT!!! wikipedia page http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/L%C3%ADnea_113_(EMT_Madrid)

And then went on to the official EMT webpage, http://www.emtmadrid.es/Servicios/lineas.aspx?mapaFiltro=11311&mapaX=444565&mapaY=4474304

It is amazing that I found it, after so many years, now that I know the numbers change, maybe I can have some fun looking up old bus lines while I was living there lol!! The P13 was nice, now the service of the 113 is even larger, and there is even a metro Elipa now there.

So glad Elipa is advancing, and glad the old P13 is still alive in the 113. Madrid to heavens and a hole in the sky to look down on it every day! Hala Madrid!! We won in Europa ,we should be easily in the semifinals of the Champions league and still in first place in the Liga by 6 points, ye ye ye!!

My last post of 2011,thanks for the memories…………………..

I am sitting at home after a long day at work and thinking about the end of 2011. ON a sad day for me as Four years ago my Mom passed away at our home, and the ashes layed at Honfleur in the ocean she loves so much. I do not know if will be able to write another post in 2011, but wanted to say a few words.

For many years, I have and do participate in several travel forums around the globe in English, French, and Spanish. The experiences have been sublime, the sharing of ideas have been superb. What is the difference between a visitor and a resident? Well, not much ,but we all love to see new things to search for new things and to share new things.

In my opinion, the best advice comes from the person who has visit and then live in a place or vice versa. There have been many times that a visitor will said something about a place where I live that if not for the mention I would never pass by it lol! and they have been interesting places. You learn every day. Sharing is important.

I had friends who told me to write a book on travel to France, well that was too much flattering, and time consuming. Then ,there were others who suggested why not a blog….a blog??? what was that lol!!! I asked several friends who were into it,and one from Spain who I have great respect for what he is doing (see my links below front page), told me to come to wordpress because it was easy to set up and use. Well as the saying goes the rest is was history.

Paris 1972 was born in november 2010,and it has been a thrill of a lifetime. Why the title ,well because after watching The Last Tango in Paris with Maria Schneider and Marlon Brandon I wanted to visit Paris, and I did for the first time. Its a love story that continues to this day without sight of ending it…. because Paris is a movable feast. And then, there was France oh well he did not have time to see it all, I have ,for the most part and can say France is a movable feast. Then it was the places I have lived in my life Cuba, Spain, and the United States, all have a bit part in this blog ,and of course football/soccer and my love for the Real Madrid (played alevin/benjamin in the 70′s there) ,and still member of the club.

Everything I write in these posts is personal experiences, not from books written by others, or saying in other forums although is great to share information, I only write about places I have been personally. So its my personal touch, and my personal spot on the internet paris1972.wordpress.com

I look forward to write more about the country or countries I love in 2012. I am still selling my house in Versailles so the entire family can move with me in near Vannes/Auray area of the morbihan, in Brittany.  So far I have half the family with me and the other in Versailles::::I guess real estate sales in these times is not that good.

I look forward to reading your comments, and I am very happy to see the following my blog had, and the ideas, sharing of travel, sharing of our world, and especially sharing of France. Thank you all, and each of you. Have a wonderful 2012, may your wishes comes thru, and may you have a wonderful time travelling and reading my blog ::) Cheers

What about the Real Madrid !!!

Here we are just after playing the derby vs Atletico de Madrid, and my REAL MADRID is leader by 6 points over the culés. It was a wonderful weekend indeed.

It started by taking Atletico out of the stadium in a 4X1 victory with a double by CR, then our neighbors Getafe beat the culés 1X0, and the timing is set at 6 points advantage, and one more game vs Sporting Gijon on Dec 3rd, before the first clasico vs the culés which if we win and no doubt this time we will we will sentence the Liga for good.

Then its on to the Champions already first in our group with one last formality game vs ajax there Dec 7th ,and on to the eighth finals at top in our group winner. The Copa del Rey or King’s Cup still coming up playing a very small team Ponferradina on Dec 13th ,that if we put our heads to it we will surpass easily too. In all it looks like the year of the Merengues, and it confirm the latest findings.

The French sports daily L’Equipe which was an integral part in the creation of the Champions league or as it was call before the Cup of Europe ,has just named the Real Madrid as the best team in the history of the competition. In the overall 56 editions of the Champions, Real Madrid is first ,followed by AC Milan, and Bayern Munich. The much publicize culés only arrives in fourth place. The top ten are Real Madrid 483 points, AC Milan 330, Bayern Munich 288,Barcelona 250,Liverpool 237,Manchester United 229, Ajax Amsterdam 220, Benfica 217, Juventus 215, Inter Milan 184 points.

The magazine L’Equipe also created an all star selection of those that played in those Champions over the years. In this selection, there are two players that have wore the shirt of Real Madrid are Alfredo Di Stefano and Clarence Seedorf.

In another developement for the first time in 38 years the Real Madrid is wearing red shirts as second uniform or away games. Before it was in 1971 and 1973 my times of living in the city!!!!

In basketball the team played in the caja magica, then went back to the Palacio de los deportes or sports palace . The team is in tied in points with the cules but second on points average in the league. IN the Euroliga we are second to Maccabi in our group, which is passing for the second round. We play Milan Nov 30, Dec 1 on our next match there. Last liga Endesa result we beat CAI Zaragoza on a great performance by Ibaka. Our next game here is vs Valencia in Madrid palacio de los deportes on Dec 10th;

In all is a great year, the only concern I have is the expenses done to get here, totally against the team historic handling of mixing international with nationals, it seems today we pay out checks to bring known players from abroad and the farm system is left to nothing or bait to exchange like a stockmarket. This is what is done when you bring an entrepreneur lke Florentino Perez as president of the club. The jury is out on his actions that are more on the business side and less on the football side. The team is winning on galactic signatures including the coach. Time will tell if the investment was worth it.

Our farm team in tercera or third division is Real Madrid Castilla beating previously first Lugo 1X0 now we are the leaders there. It has 3 players champion of Europe under 19 in Carvajal, Morata, and Alex. Next game vs Atletico B on Nov 27th.

ON history let me tell you that the Real Madrid is the only team that hve beaten a current world champion when on May 30,1954 we beat reigning world champion Uruguay 2×0 at Chamartin stadium with goals by Di Stefano, min 30, and Zàrraga min 54.

The club is trying to improve the facilities n the training grounds at Valdebebas, now even a hotel for the players and staff is envision. More of this on the club official webpage http://www.realmadrid.com/cs/Satellite/en/Club/1193041516878/Historia/Real_Madrid_City.htm . This project started in SEpt 30,2005 given it a new name as Real Madrid City and the farms teams a new name as the Fabrica or factory team.

The next big project in union with the above is to renovate the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid ! There since Dec 14, 1947 and already a FIFA top rated stadium as a five stars rating. One of the improvements will be the enlargement of the trophy room/museum (oh yes it will grow for sure::)) and the tour Bernabeu will be expanded inside facilities to see (already 750 000 persons paid visits per year). It will have a plaza in front of stadium on paseo de la castellana and another one by the current esquina del Bernabeu. A new underground parking for capacity of 1000 cars and improvement on the current one at padre Damian and concha Espina with 500 places. More of it in the official club webpage at http://www.realmadrid.com/cs/Satellite/en/1193041512791/Historia/Santiago_Bernabeu.htm

In all again, a wonderful weekend, and all looks very promising, I will keep an eye on with my friends from Plataforma Blanca so the club continues to enforce its sporting objectives ahead of the material ones. http://www.plataformablanca.com/

Until next round ball news and very white wishes to all our followers worldwide, we are one family;love you all. Hala Madrid !!!!

Some news from Spain VIIII

Well the biggest news out of Spain nowdays is the sitting by Puerta del Sol in Madrid. Long time coming as I hear my family and friends there talking about the economic problems there ,and especially the high unemployment rate. The demontrators have been told by the Supreme court it is illegal to camp out there, but they have vow to continue for at least a week more until reforms are brought in. Naturally the present govt of is not going for re election as if they knew already the outcome. the voting is still going on today in the Communidad de Madrid with higher voter turnover than anticipated about 35,7%  by 14h according to El Mundo newspaper. You can follow the voting in Spanish here http://www.votosycifras.com/

In more lighter news the football league or Liga is over after 38 games, the winner of course is Barcelona, with Real Madrid close in second again. They ,however, can feel some reliefs as winning the King’s Cup this year for the first time in 18 yrs. The team finish with 102 goals and Cristiano Ronaldo tops all time scorer with 41 goals !!! In other the Deportivo La Coruña will say goodbye to the first division Liga after 20 years there, and also ,will go down to second Hercules and Almeria.  Sevilla and Atletic Bilbao will play next year in the Europa League and the Champions league contenders will be Barcelona, Real Madrid, Valencia, and Villareal.

In Germany our beloved Raul Gonzalez Blanco, our my Captain of Real Madrid won what was missing from his record a Cup, winning the German Cup competition with Schalke 04 against Duisburg 5×0!!

While in the Liga ACB basketball playoffs, the Real Madrid goes to semifinals after beating Fuenlabrada again last night. Next opponent will be Baskonia Bilbao in the semifinals while the other will pit Barcelona vs Caja Laboral. Depending on the TV choices of the chains, the dates for the five game semifinal series will be May 26 , 27 , 28 , and 29, the second games will be May 31 and June 1 and if goes to four games then June 2 and 3 , if a fifth game is needed it will be June 4 and 5.

In the second divisio or Liga Adelante, and after the news of  Betis of Sevilla to move up next year to the big game, the second team is a soft nostalgic for me, it will be the fourth Madrid team in the first league or Liga BBVA (others are Getafe, Atletico de Madrid, and Real Madrid) , Rayo Vallecano from the district of Vallecas.olé Congrats. There is still two games remaining to see who else will accompany them to the top contenders are the Barcelona B and Granada.  In Segunda B or like the third divison already the Real Madrid Castilla is in third place and qualified for the playoff to move up as the top 4 goes into a complicated system to bring 3 to the second division.  The first playoff game vs Alcoyano was lost 0X2 in Madrid now they need to overcome this deficit to continue in the competition. Hala Madrid chicos !!!

A agreement has been reach with the mayor of Madrid for Apple inc to occupy an emblematic building in the Puerta del Sol, the Tio Pepe building that was teh Hotel Paris and some stores that long gone for lack of rent payment. The hotel Paris was ,also, abandoned.

And all under sunny skies great to be out, and they are ::) Cheers ,and have a great week.

Some news from Spain VIII

Well here I am ready to go out but not without letting you know a bit of my old street Calle Alcala in Madrid.  Temps there will be from 9° to 25°C in the next few days.

I lived right on Calle Alcala for four years, it was magical, times never to be forgotten. It is with nostalgia and pleasure that I will tell you some bits of history and things to see right on it.

First you have the magnificent Real Casa de la Aduana (Royal customs house) at no 5,7,9,and 11. Built in 1645 on the Léña now call Calle de la Bolsa. It was in 1761-1769  that king Charles III ordered Sabatini to built the one on Alcala street. It was dotted with 3 huge patios of which 2 were made apart by a huge hallway that linked with a star of two tears and had large rooms that later served as warehouse . In 1848 the ministry of Hacienda ( treasury) . In 1944 new additions were done, and as of today the Treasury dept of Spain is still there.

The Palacio de la Equitativa or Banco Español de Credito at Calle Alcala no 14. Banks were growing in Spain and by the 1882-1891 right around Calle Alcalá  and Calle  Sevilla, it was built the Sociedad de Seguros La Equitativa (insurance company la equitativa or equitable) .  It went thru several occupants until 1910 it was housing the dependancies of the Casino de Madrid; later it housed the Embassy of Japan , and finally the seat of the  Círculo de Bellas Artes until its transfer to the new building in Calle Alcala. then in 1920 it was the  Banco Español de Crédito .

Casino de Madrid, calle Alcala 15, it opens its door in January 16,1837 at Calle de la Visitación no 7,and rooms adjacing to the Café del Sólito. In 1840 it was translated again to calle del Príncipe, next to  Teatro de la Comedia. Then it was moved to the corner of calle de Alcalá and Calle Sevilla in the same building as the  Café Suizo. Shortly afterward razed to built the building of the Banco de Bilbao. The casino was moved again in 1891 to a building at the corner of the before mentioned Sociedad de Seguros La Equitativa, at the same area. in 1903 the company of the Casino bought land to the  Veloz Club at Calle Alcalá 15, and on 1905 the construction of the new Casino was begun.

Banco de Bilbao, Calle Alcala no 16 corner with Calle Sevilla.  Built from 1919-1923. Banco Central built in 1925 at Calle Alcala 49. Banco Mercantil Industrial at Calle Alcala 39 built 1933-1945. Banco de Vizcaya, Calle Alcala 45 where it was once a convent or  Convento de San Hermenegildo, built between  1733-1742 , then Teatro Apollo in 1873 to 1929, here the most famous zarzuelas and opera plays of Madrid were first shown such as La verbena de la Paloma, La revoltosa, Doña Francisquita, that gave it the name of Cathedral of the small genre.  The new buiilding dates from  between 1931-1934.

Edifico de La Union y Fenix Español at Calle Alcala,23 next to the church of Calatravas, and the building done from 1928-1930.  The tower is shown with an ave Fenix or a bird fenix on top, and has American building characteristics such as glass in its concrete design.

The Casa del  Párroco de San José  at  Calle de Alcalá, 41  corner with Calle del Marqués de Valdeiglesias. Built between 1910-1912.  To give a line to the new Gran Via that was to be built. Part of the church of same name.

Perhaps the most famous building of all is the Metropolis at Calle Alcala 39. The insurance company La Unión and the Fénix made a contest to Spanish and French architects for the building of its head office. They had acquired land between the Calle Alcala and Calle  Caballero de GraciaThe French team won the contest and building began in 1907 with a Spanish architect finishing them in 1910.  It is beautifully done with a tower or  torreón,in which second floor has a wonderful rotonda of pairs of corinthian columns holding a third floor decorated with statues and artistics designs. The dome  was crowned by a ave fenix that represented the company that owned the building but in 1975 a new company replaced it with victory symbol.

Teatro Alcazar, Calle Alcala  20 built in 1921, in 1924 it is shown the work of Madame Pompadour, and from 1940 its a cinema. (the one I went the most in my youth) . Nuevo Teatro Alcala, Calle Jorge Juan 62 ,corner with Calle Alcala, done in 1925 and it was here that the theatrical work of Jesus Christ Superstar was first shown in Spain. Some news from Spain V

Well rain is the word my family tells me but its May, the aguaceros de Mayo….showers of May are in. 11°C to 21°C with rain for the weekend again.

My stories went way back on this but just today I can confirm it as reading my new Madridista magazine of Real Madrid read the article that when Real Madrid was founded in 1902 four members of the team were of Cuban origins. The brothers Armando,Mario,José Giralt and Antonio Sanchez Neyra. Many others follow, and now there is even a peña or supporters group in Havana that meets at the Hotel Nacional with 250 members!!!

One of its members is the actor Jorge Perugorria, a Goya winner and the group was form in his house in Santa Fe (near Punta Brava) so there you go even Football/soccer was strong, and I knew it.

these restaurant owners were given the order of Madrid by the mayor for their contribution to tourism in Madrid, these are Pedro Abrego ,founder of the  restaurants Mesón Txistu and Asador Donostiarra; Lucio Blázquez, owner of  Casa Lucio; Abraham García, owner of  restaurant Viridiana; Evaristo García Gómez, owner of  Pescaderías Coruñesas ,and the restaurants El Pescador and O’Pazo; Miguel García Gómez, owner of  La Tarinera and Los Remos;and José Luis Ruiz del Portal, promoter of the group  José Luis. Madrid receives today 7,9 millions tourist a year. el Mundo newspaper article.

Real Madrid tied Barcelona 1X1 in the Nou Camp for the semi finals of the Champions league. Again a goal was disallowed on Higuain by the belgian referee as Mourinho has stated we are playing always either with 10 vs 12 or 11 vs 16 ( for all the referees) ;the momentum was for Real Madrid if the goal would have been allowed. Barcelona moves on to the Final in Wembley London possibly against the Manchester United. The MU plays tonite against Schalke 04 already ahead 0X2. The UEFA needs to up the quality of refereeing or introduce the already suggested video replay to the game.

The tramwayof Arturo Soria in my old district of Ciudad Lineal, was planned for a way of 40 meters wide joining the main points in the city for a distance of 50 kms. The main road that today is call Calle de Arturo Soria is born in Chamartin and ends at Calle  Alcalá. It was due to economic of the times only 5 kms long that today you can see in certain areas pieces of it. This is very nice article in Madriddiario, as I took the tramway to see my Aunt at Canillejas which at that time had no metro only a tramway from Ciudad Lineal. They were in circulation until June 1st 1972. Now for shopping you can go to Arturo Soria Plaza webpage here http://www.arturosoriaplaza.es/

Some news from Spain IIII

Well a few days after the great football/soccer game to keep my head cool. The Kings’ s Cup win over Barcelona 1X0 at Valencia was glorious. IT was time to come back and win the competition now won 18 times in our history ,that is Real Madrid’s history. Goal by Cristiano Ronaldo.

Then came the Champions league game at Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu stadium. Barcelona won 0X2 over Real Madrid putting themselve pretty much in the final. However, as coach Mourinho has repeately stated over the last few months!!! Barcelona somehow is always help in these big matches, first Chelsea ,then Arsenal ,and now Real Madrid.  Its difficult to play against a good team like Barcelona with 11 players, but when somehow you find yourselves always a man down because of a bad referee decision with 10 men its impossible. Lionel Messi scored the two goals after Real Madrid was down to 10 men do to a bad call on Pepe that was red carded and sent off. All videos on all angles in the world show it was not enough for a red card except referee Stark.

Referee Stark of Germany was coming from been name in the German Bundesliga the worse referee in the first half of the season there. Players voted in Kicker magazine. So how UEFA allows a referée that was voted the worse in its league to handle the most important game in Europe??? How UEFA allows a referée that after the last World Cup (won by Spain) had said the best player is Messi ??? The referees are supposed to remained neutral, and after voicing his pleasures UEFA should not had named him to refereed the match base on conflict of interests!!!

The return game at the Camp Nou in Barcelona is for May 3rd. The other semifinal as expected Manchester United beat Schalke 04 0X2 and will play the return at home on May 4th.

In the meantime, Real Madrid plays Zaragoza in the Liga May 2nd as well as  Real Sociedad vs Barcelona. Cristiano Ronaldo will start on the bench as penalty for his outspokeness after the Champions league match.  Coach Mourinho is expected to be sanction with four games suspension, the charges vs Barcelona are still pending.

Now there is a holiday in Spain on Monday May 2nd.  Its Spain independance day from Napoleonic France , a lot more in Spanish here http://www.1808-1814.org/efem/mayo.html  ,and some in English from wikipedia here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dos_de_Mayo_Uprising

For the activities around the festivities of the Dos de Mayo holiday , see the city of Madrid webpage with the agenda http://www.madrid.org/fiestasdel2demayo/2011/calendario.html#a02mayo

The Feria de Abril in Sevilla is undergoing just wonderfully , need to know more check this site of Tourism in Spain, http://www.spain.info/en/reportajes/la_feria_de_abril_por_el_dia.html
